EU Report Highlights Sulphur Hexafluoride Countdown

Nov 02, 2020. On Sept. 30, 2020, the EU released a detailed report (1) outlining alternatives to sulphur hexafluoride (Sulfr hexafluoride) for use in switchgear and related equipment. The report also extensively covers market impact and cost issues. This is the latest in a series of indications that the pressure is on to phase out sf 6, as part of the EU’s mission (2) to cut harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by two-thirds between 2014 and 2030.

Sulfur hexafluoride - Wikipedia

Sulfur hexafluoride or sulphur hexafluoride, is an extremely potent and persistent greenhouse gas that is primarily utilized as an electrical insulator and arc suppressant. It is inorganic, colorless, odorless, non-flammable, and non-toxic. SF 6 has an octahedral geometry, consisting of six fluorine atoms attached to a central sulfur atom. It is a hypervalent molecule. Typical for a nonpolar gas, SF 6 is poorly soluble in water but quite soluble in nonpolar organic solvents. It has a density of
